Samsung Notebook 3 Review

When performing office-type tasks and during idle, the cooling system of our review model remains unobtrusive and quiet – we measured 32 to 35 d. B(A). Samsung’s Eco Mode, where the fan is turned off, causes the fan to stop spinning. This is when the hard disk is loudest, emitting a loud click sound as soon as the drive is accessed. The notebook’s performance with more complex processors and GPU intensive apps will cause system noise to increase up to 42 d.B.(A). This can be quite annoying, but is still audible.

Electricity Consumption

It is important to consider power consumption when considering the impact on the environment. However, it is also an indicator of how efficient the system can be with battery power. During idle and while in “Eco Mode”, the Series 3 NP350V5C uses less power than the Vostro 3560 and the Inspiron 15R Special Edition (although not any less than the Samsung Series 5 550P5C-T02 When subjected to full load, the notebook consumes up to 73.1 Watts – a value that can’t be easily compared to the other models mentioned above as the hardware is different. The Vostro 3560, for instance, was reviewed with the i5-3210M (although a version with the i7-3612QM is available). The power adapter is rated for 90 Watts, which is adequately dimensioned, and should offer enough headroom.

The AMD version of our system (the Series 3 355V5C – S05DE) uses less power. We recorded an average consumption between 14.1 and 67.1 Watts (idle/load).

It could have been perfect: low weight, decent enough build quality, long battery life, good looks, a dedicated graphics card, and a good price-performance ratio – we even would have overlooked the lack of stability and rigidity in the design. This multimedia notebook does most of the right things and is a great solution to watching videos and editing them. Unfortunately, the notebook’s performance when running on battery power means that gaming is impossible. This is because the GPU and processor throttle the output of each other. Therefore the notebook must be reduced in quality to make up the difference.

Those who are able to live with the limitation of the NP350V5C–S07 will enjoy the design. However, the street price of 800 Euros ($1000), is fair. This results in very limited competition. You can get the Dell Vostro 3560 with identical hardware, a larger display (matte or Full HD), but it is heavier, weighs 50 euros ($65), and lasts less.

The Dell Inspiron15R Special Edition has a more powerful graphics card, but it is also heavier and costs more. However, the battery life and build quality are both shorter and less satisfactory. Acer Aspire 771G-736b8G50Maii and the HP Pavilion 2007sg, both with 17-inch screens, are worth considering. The NP355V5C could be a good choice if you are looking for a more affordable option with less power and longer battery life.

All the positive aspects of the Samsung Series 3 are the long battery life and the powerful hardware. However, this notebook may be an acceptable option if the user is willing to accept performance limitations while the notebook is not plugged in, the dimmable display and lack of rigidity. No other notebook offering the same form factor can offer comparable performance for the price.

We love the very low weight, and fair prices.

The things we would love to see: Greater rigidity, and greater resilience — especially for the keyboard area as well as the display lid.

Surprise! How little performance is lost when the battery life of the notebook’s computer is low.

The competition Notebooks with the same form factor and similar performance:

Dell Inspiron15R (Special Edition), Dell Vostro 3560 Samsung 550P5C Samsung 550P5C Samsung 550P5C Samsung 550P5C Samsung Series 7 700Z5A. If a larger screen is desired:

HP Pavilion g7-2007sg or Acer V3-771G-736b8G50Maii. Acer Travel is a good option if you need a smaller display. The Mate P643MG-5324G75Mikk may be worth a glance.
